Welcome Letter / Carta de Bienvenida

I know that everyone is super excited to start school (and I'm not talking about teachers, hahaha), especially the little ones who will start this adventure for the first time. Parents are excited as well, but some of them feel anxious, they don't know how their "babies" will handle this new challenge.

So, the atmosphere you create on "Meet the Teacher Day" is really important to make them feel comfortable. Many of us have done this for quite a while, but still, every group is different, and there is always something new. 

So, for those of you, who like me, need some extra help with preparing for that big day, I created a welcome letter. I give this letter to parents and ask them to read it to their child on the day (or night) before school starts. I tell them to cuddle in bed, read the letter, and then talk a little about the fun things you do at school, like reading, painting, scavenger hunts, singing, dancing, well, you get the idea.

I used the polka dots letter last year, I printed the stars and added them to the letter and to the envelopes, here are some ideas:

 

I used the big stars to decorate the letters, adding some glitter to them!

I also printed my name and my kiddos' names and used them to "sign" the letters and for the envelopes.

I also used the big stars to decorate pencils, I gave these to my students when they came to school. They were so excited to see their names on the stars.

El Primer Dia de Clases

Se acabaron las vacaciones; la playa, los parques y los centros comerciales quedaron atrás. Es hora de regresar al colegio, de ver a los compañeros del año anterior y de conocer nuevos. Es una emoción que en los niños pequeños es fuerte y se va perdiendo conforme pasan los años.

Pero esta vez lo viví más desde el otro lado... no como maestra sino como mamá. Con dos hijas pequeñas resulta un reto tener todo listo el tan anhelado día: vestuario, agendas, loncheras, bolsones... es una lista interminable de cosas y detalles que hacen de esto todo un ritual. Envidio a las mamás de los varones que con un poco de gel en el cabello ya está todo listo... en nuestro caso son trenzas, 5 colitas de diferente color, ganchos o moñas, ufff!!! Sólo para la peinada hay que reservar otra media hora y confiar que al verse al espejo les gustará! Y conforme pasen los días nos iremos convirtiendo aparte de mamás en estilistas profesionales.

Se suben al carro (coche, automóvil) y aquí viene el otro rol: chofer. Es primer día y como no está calculado el tiempo que tomará el viaje, es momento de respirar profundo y ceder la vía a cuanto motorista y camionetero irresponsable pase a la par. Pero hay que llegar a tiempo y por lo mismo nos sale el gánster que llevamos dentro y comenzamos a “torear” por aquí y por allá.

Llegamos! Nos estiramos hasta el sillón de atrás para quitar los cinturones de seguridad tratando con el pie de no soltar el freno, les damos un graaaaan beso y entregamos el “equipaje” a las maestras sonrientes que esperan en el colegio. Y esa es la sorpresa más agradable, ver a las maestras darles un abrazo, llamarlas por su nombre, ayudarles con sus cosas y con emoción recibirlas. Me quedo por un momento viendo hacia la entrada, tratando de ver un poco más adentro, pero no, ninguna de las dos voltea a verme. Ya con pena que el padre que está atrás me bocine, me voy, pero me voy feliz. Feliz porque sé que las dos se quedaron felices también, que si no voltearon a verme es porque el ambiente que las maestras crean es tan agradable que mami no hace falta. Por unas horas estarán en otro lugar, cantarán, bailarán, pintarán, y sobre todo, sonreirán.

Y eso es lo que toda maestra quiere, que los padres nos vayamos satisfechos y confiados por dejar a nuestros hijitos ahí. Por eso mismo el reto de la maestra es lograr que los chicos se sientan tan a gusto que por un momento no necesiten la presencia de mami o papi. Pasan a ser sus hijitos también porque hay que limpiar caritas sucias, amarrar cintas de zapatos, lavar manitas, y muchas veces alguno de ellos te llamará por equivocación “mami”. Y aquí solo empieza tu “primer día de clases” con los nuevos retos que cada año trae, pero esa, es otra historia. :)
